This incredibly flexible instrument, which is frequently used in Samba, Choro, and Coco but is also commonly utilized in jazz and funk, is often referred to as the unofficial "Drum of Brazil" because of its enormous popularity there. The drum is played by holding it in one hand while striking it with the other, though it is occasionally installed like a snare drum.
